Testimonial: Content creation at Elia

Elia is the operator of Belgium’s high-voltage electricity grid. It ensures a reliable electricity supply by managing the grid, balancing supply and demand, and supporting the integration of renewable energy sources.

Why did Elia contact The Learning Hub?

Elia assigns a project manager to each project to ensure a smooth and successful delivery. One of their key responsibilities is to create a realistic schedule that takes potential influencing factors, such as material deliveries, into account.

Previously, project managers had to complete a series of classroom trainings to learn the relevant theory. However, this was very time consuming for both the participants and the internal trainer and the approach often left some individuals struggling to grasp the basic concepts. This led to poorly developed and monitored schedules in practice.

This prompted Elia to approach The Learning Hub for a solution. We designed an e-learning module to replace the first theoretical training session, allowing everyone to explore the theory at their own pace. By incorporating interactive elements, we encourage project managers to actively engage with and think critically about the theory. This all resulted in an interactive e-learning course with an estimated duration of approximately 30 minutes.

The challenge

Creating and monitoring a schedule involves several steps, each varying in complexity. To ensure everyone fully understands the theory, we chose to use two practical cases to apply the concepts. Each concept was applied to both cases for a better understanding.

We developed a simple case where Jef prepares a schedule for his daughter’s birthday party, alongside a more complex case focused on projects within Elia, where Anna creates a schedule for the construction of a new high-voltage mast. By engaging with these cases, we make the theory more manageable, increasing the chances that everyone will grasp the concepts effectively.

The module was structured according to the scaffolding principle, which means that there is a progressive difficulty level. The theory is introduced step by step, with exercises that build on concepts from previous topics. Throughout the module, the project managers actively engage with the content. Various interaction types, including reasoning questions and fill-in exercises, allow them to create their own schedules in a safe environment.

The module contains many new concepts. To maintain clarity, we created an overview that provides project managers with a concise summary of all terms. This overview enables project managers to consult key information throughout the module and compare differences between concepts. Each definition includes examples, making the concepts more tangible.

It is with great satisfaction that we look back on the realization of this successful e-learning. The Learning Hub listens and thinks along to create a customized learning solution that fully meets our objectives. Their creativity and expertise enabled us to bring this topic to life in an accessible and interactive manner.
